I recently returned from a fantastic trip to Greece with Trafalgar Tours.  It was my first time traveling to Greece and my first time traveling with a guided tour and I loved it!  Let me start off by saying that Greece should be a bucket list destination for everyone.  Our group traveled with Trafalgar Tours on their Splendors of Greece Country Explorer tour.  It was a tour of mainland Greece which included time in Athens, Nafplio, Delphi, Arachova, Meteora and other charming Greek towns.

We had the opportunity to visit the beautiful and vibrant city of Athens which included the Parthenon dedicated to the Goddess Athena, the Acropolis Museum and the lively Plaka full of restaurants and shops.  We left Athens to travel the Corinth Canal where we stopped for Greek Frappes and photos of the mighty canal.  We then traveled on to the Sanctuary of Asclepius, The God of Medicine.  We enjoyed a sunny afternoon here and I loved the views from the top of the Amphitheatre. We finished our day in the seaside village of Naflpio with Italian gelato and a glass of wine.

We then traveled on Olympia where we experienced a traditional Greek dinner with the Karambellas family on their olive and wine farm, Magna Grecia.  This dinner is a unique part of Trafalgar's Be My Guest and Connect with Locals experience.  It was a super fun evening of learning about this small family farm in the heart of Greece. They showed us how they harvest their olive trees to create delicious olive oils.  We also had an amazing dinner in their onsite restaurant complete with traditional Greek music, dancing and lots of laughter.  It was a magical evening and a highlight of everyone's trip!

We awoke in the morning to news that there were additional outbreaks in the area of Covid-19 so our tour of the ancient Olympic site was cut short due to the museum and grounds being closed. We were still able to do a quick walk around the site and see the first Olympic track and listen as a local guide to Olympia told us about the first Olympic games.  Since our tour of Olympia was cut short our amazing tour guide Lisa was able to arrange a tour of one of Greece's oldest wineries, Achaia Clauss.  It looked like an ancient castle surrounded by lemon trees and fields of vibrant yellow flowers.  If I would not have been traveling with Trafalgar and our wonderful guide Lisa I don't think I would have discovered this beautiful treasure overlooking the sea on my own.

We enjoyed lunch in the seaside town of Itea and then checked into the Aeglia Resort & Spa in Arachova.  This is a ski resort in the winter and the views of the mountains were magnificent. This was one of the most charming mountain resorts I've ever had the pleasure of staying in.  It had beautiful rooms built into the hillside with wonderful views and architecture.  We finished off the day to a spectacular sunset and another delicious Greek dinner.

The next day we had some time to walk through Arachova and enjoyed the town. Then it was onto Delphi and the Temple of Apollo.  We again had a local guide walk us through the site and the museum.  This ancient archeological site is from the 8th century BC and is surrounded by mountains.  We then went into the town of Delphi for lunch where I enjoyed the best mushroom risotto and local Greek beer!

Our final full day in Greece was spent exploring Meteora a UNESCO Work Heritage site of 6 Eastern Orthodox monasteries.  These monasteries are built on giant slabs of rock that jut up from the earth like they are reaching for the heavens.  Truly a magnificent site to see!

This was an amazing adventure in Greece and it was made even more special because I met some wonderful new friends on the tour.  I highly recommend going on a guided tour if you haven't already.  I felt taken care of on the tour and I learned so much about Greek culture.  There is true value in having a tour guide that has lived in Greece.  I always felt safe even in the uncertain time we were traveling. It was really the perfect Greek adventure!
