Fabulous Ireland

My experience in Ireland will help you plan the Irish vacation of your dreams. I had the opportunity to experience Ireland via a guided tour. We went from Dublin to Belfast down to Galway and covered the Dingle Peninsula.

There are many people that suffer from anxiety when traveling, including myself … you’re not alone.  I would like to share with you my personal struggles because I know there are so many more people out there that are struggling with Anxiety. It may be in another form, but its something that I work through and hope by sharing my story it helps you work through the ups and downs. I used to be so embarrassed by it, but now I do my best to control it—but it sometimes controls me.

I have struggled for many years.  When I have a trip coming up about a week prior I start over thinking things and I do my best to keep busy with packing, work, and cleaning.  Two days prior I will pack my suitcase and then the night before I repack and take out what I don’t need. I think I do this to keep myself busy.  My emotions run high the minute I walk out of the office … my out of office message on, I’ve said my goodbye’s and then I shut my car door and the tears start flowing.

I wish I could stop my emotions from getting the best of me, but I cannot.  The 24 hours leading up to the trip are sheer hell for me.  The sad thing is the minute I get in my car to drive to the airport I am fine. Several years ago when I traveled to Ireland, I found out when I returned that my mother had been in the hospital. My family didn’t tell me because they didn’t want my trip to be ruined. Thankfully it wasn’t anything extreme, but this situation has triggered me to feel that something bad will happen any time I travel.

I shared my story with a friend and she opened up to me about her personal struggles too. She gets herself so stressed before a trip that she makes herself physically sick. She’s also is just fine as the travel day is underway.

A few tips when preparing for a trip:

  • Be prepared – have a packing list prepared

  • Distract yourself – keep busy leading up to your trip

  • Reach out to someone – talk to a friend about your worries

  • Relax – I know this is difficult and not always achievable, but consider breathing exercises, yoga or even a spa day

  • Protect yourself – get travel insurance so you know if anything goes wrong you can get home

Remember you’re not alone. I would be happy to help with your travel plans and ways to cope with travel anxiety.
