Christmas Market in Bavaria

Bavaria is a large state in Germany which incorporates several of Germany’s largest cities, Munich, Nuremberg, and Augsburg.  Bavarian history goes back a long time – almost 1,000 years, and Bavarians are proud of their history and keep traditions alive through music, costumes, food and drink.

When folks think of Bavaria, the first thing that comes to mind is Oktoberfest and beer!  If you plan to visit Oktoberfest, it’s best to plan WAY ahead, especially now as COVID restrictions limit the number of attendees.

The history of Bavarian brewing is a distinct source of pride.  The Duke of Bavaria established a beer purity law in 1487, which decreed that beer could only be made of three ingredients, water, barley, and hops.  Although this law was abandoned in 1987, many Bavarian brewers still comply with it to set their brands apart.

Man cannot live by beer alone, and some Bavarian specialties are enjoyed world-wide.  Bratwurst, knockwurst's, and other sausages are fairly common everywhere, but  maybe you’ve never tried weisswurst (white sausage) or Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle).  A typical Bavarian breakfast consists of white sausage, pretzels and beer.Regensberg is home to the oldest sausage maker in the world.

Nuremberg is famous for its lebkuchen; (gingerbread) and pretzels, and hosts numerous walking food tours.

Lesser known, but also popular, is the Bavarian Weinfeste held in several villages in the Franconia wine region.  This region is located along one of the longest tributaries of the Rhine River, and is particularly scenic.  Wurzburg is worth visiting just for its fairy tale atmosphere and the Silvaner wine which rivals the German favorite Riesling.

Bavarians are friendly, casual hosts who love to have a good time.  You’ll be sure to enjoy yourself there – it’s a great destination for family gatherings and groups of friends who like a party!  I’d love to help you plan your own party in Bavaria.
