The Spanish port of Malaga was once just a jumping off point for people planning to tour other more popular destinations in Spain.  Now due to some aggressive renovations and innovative planning, the city has become a magnet for tourists who enjoy fine museums, historical buildings, masterful architecture as well as the beautiful beaches of the Costa del Sol.

Historical landmarks include the Alcazaba, a palace built by the Moors in the 11th century.  The Castillo de Gibralfaro, also dating back to Moorish times, sits high on a hilltop overlooking the city.  It served as housing for the military as well as being a lighthouse, guiding ships safely into the harbor.  Malaga Cathedral, built in the 16th century, is nicknamed “The One Armed Woman” as the design called for two towers and only one was ever completed.  Its magnificent interior houses 15 chapels and 2 massive organs with over 4,000 pipes.

Malaga also boasts many museums, the most popular being the Picasso Museum, dedicated to the works of Malaga’s most celebrated son, Pablo Picassso.  Many of the works displayed in this elegant 16th century villa have never been displayed in any other venue. The Centre Pompidou Malaga is a modern glass cube, housing artwork from the 20th and 21st centuries  The Carmen Thyssen museum focuses on works by Andulusian painters and depicts Spanish culture. Other smaller museums are dedicated to wine making, music around the globe, and automotive design.

The Parque de Malaga and the Jardin Botanico Historico La Conception are both worthy of a visit if you enjoy landscape design, fountains and sculptures as well as unusual flowers and plants. The total renovation of the port itself has encouraged trendy restaurants and bars, shops and galleries, making those who arrive in port anxious to hang around and see what else Malaga has to offer.

If Spain is on your radar, check out Malaga.  I’d like to help you plan a trip.
