Visiting Kilauea Volcano at Night

One of the highlights of a vacation in Hawaii is a visit to Volcanoes National Park.  The park is located on the Big Island of Hawaii, and boasts two active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa.  The area was included in the national park system in 1916 and is popular with tourists who enjoy hiking and camping in this wilderness environment and viewing the unusual plant and wildlife. Geologists observe the volcanic activity, studying the origins of the Hawaiian chain of islands.

There are plenty of sights to see on the way to the park.  The black sand beach at Punaluu is a favorite for photographers and you might be lucky enough to see giant sea turtles that inhabit the shoreline.  But be sure to wear some beach sandals – that black sand gets HOT!  Once in the park, be prepared for a fairly strenuous hike across the uneven landscape, formed by lava flow from previous eruptions.  If you’re hiking or camping you can expect moderate temperatures at sea level that cool as you climb to the summit of Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet.

The most spectacular views of the volcano occur at night when you can observe the molten lava from Kilauea as it flows into the sea, causing massive clouds of steam and sparks to fly into the night sky. This doesn’t occur every night, so as you’re touring the park and the Jagger Museum, check with the park ranger to check the probability of seeing this awesome display of the volcano’s power.
