The city of Tokyo is located on the east coast of the island of Honshu.  This large metropolitan area spreads from the Edogawa River in the east to the Tanzawa mountains in the west.  The city has 23 precincts and each district has its own particular characteristics. The central wards west of the river are those most often visited by tourists.  Getting around is easy using the clean modern trains, subways, and expressways.  You’ll find that most of what you want to see is accessible by using the Yamanote Train Line.

Neighborhood highlights:

  • Asakusa – Sensoji Buddhist Temple

  • Harajuku – Meiji Shrine

  • Ginza – upscale galleries, designer shops

  • Roppongi – nightlife and fine dining

  • Taito-ku (old town) – Tokyo National Museum and the Ueno Park and Zoo

  • Chiyoda ku – Imperial Palace and Tokyo Station

Food and entertainment – You won’t want to miss trying some of Tokyo’s culinary specialties, from the humble ramen stands (found on almost every street corner) to high end Wagyu beef.  Sushi, yakitori, tonkatsu, and soba are other dishes that have become popular worldwide, but tasting the authentic Japanese versions of these favorites is a must.

No trip to Japan would be complete without a visit to a traditional Japanese garden.  Some of the best are the gardens at the Imperial Palace, the Shinjuku Gyoen Garden, and the Denpoin Temple Garden. When you’ve enjoyed a full day of sightseeing, take a hot spring bath at Oedo Onsen. For some great photo ops, take a hike up Mt. Takao.  Other activities that are part of Japanese culture are sumo wrestling matches, and traditional Kabuki dramatic performances.

While Covid restrictions for travel to Japan are still in place, it’s not too early to start planning a trip for future travel.
