During the summer months, Romans love to be outdoors, enjoying a glass of wine or some pasta at the many outdoor trattorias or taking the family for a day at one of the many beaches close to the city center.  Summer is also the time of year when tourists flock to Italy, so you can expect crowds, but you will also have the benefit of being part of the many events and festivals that are held each year.  Rome’s Summer Festival is held June through September and features outdoor cinema, opera and ballets throughout the city.  And you won’t want to miss the VinoForum, a wine tasting event in June.

If you prefer to avoid the crowds (and the heat of summer), plan to travel in March, April (avoid Holy Week!) or October.  The Ides of March event features a reenactment of the murder of Julius Caesar.  Citta della Pizza (where Italy’s pizza makers come together to delight visitors with an infinite variety of pizza) is held in April. The Cortili Aperti, held in May, is an event where owners of extravagant historical homes open them for tours by the public.  The Festa del Cinema di Roma attracts celebrities and movie lovers alike during the month of October.

I’d love to get you started on a plan to visit Rome.  Whatever the season there’s always something exciting going on.
