Rocky Mountaineer Train

One of the most popular car trips for summer travelers is the journey through the Canadian Rockies.  The majestic mountain peaks, peaceful valleys split by rushing rocky rivers, and abundant wildlife along the way are magnetic draws for tourists all over the world.  There are wonderful places to hike -- Johnston Canyon just outside of Banff is one of them, affording the hiker spectacular views of waterfalls and steep canyons.  You’ll want to drive the Icefields Parkway outside of Jasper and take tea at the Chateau Lake Louise,..It’s wonderful to be able to do these things on your own schedule, taking extra time for that special photograph, or stopping for a well deserved snack after a long hike.

The downside to driving is that the passengers get to enjoy all the views while the driver has to stay focused on the road, as there are innumerable switchbacks, few opportunities to pass slower vehicles, and steep cliffs on both sides of the road that are not for the faint of heart!  Accommodations can be hard to come by during the summer peak travel time unless you make reservations far in advance.

Train travel on the Rocky Mountaineer is an excellent alternative to driving.  Not only does it free up all members of your party from the tensions of driving, it offers views of remarkable landscapes (like Pyramid Falls) that are only visible by rail.  Hesitant to put up with a cramped cabin and a bunk that’s too short and narrow?  No worries -- each night the train stops in a different location, where you’ll find your luggage waiting at a comfortable hotel.  You won’t miss any of the scenery by sleeping through it -- in the morning you’re back on the train, enjoying the views in luxurious coaches.

If it’s hard to decide between the autonomy of a road trip or the comfort of a train ride, you can have the best of both worlds by booking a self-drive package that includes a rental car in one of the stops along the train route so you can explore the area in greater depth.

Traveling by train takes people back to a more relaxed period in time where life wasn’t lived at today's frantic pace.  Call me to book this unforgettable adventure.
