If you’ve ever read “Under the Tuscan Sun” (or have seen the movie), you’ll understand why the region of Tuscany is so popular with visitors.  The countryside is the epitome of Italian charm – sunny skies, rolling hills covered with vineyards and quaint villages.  It’s also full of history, art, and a welcoming local population.

Some of the world’s most popular wines are produced in Tuscany.  Chianti, of course is well known, but if you’re a wine aficionado you’ll want to try the Brunello di Montalcino or the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano., which is a little easier on the pocketbook.

Highlights of Florence:

  • In City Center the Duomo is the one of the world’s largest cathedrals

  • The medieval towers of San Gimignano, about 25 miles south of Florence, are witness to the power of wealthy landholders who controlled the town.

  • The Uffizi Gallery, which houses masterpieces by Botticelli, Da Vinci and other Italian masters.

Highlights of Siena:

  • The 12th century architecture of this town has been carefully preserved and restored, and helps the visitor “step back in time” through local pageants and historical presentations.

  • The Palazzo Pubblico housed the government of Siena in the 13th century, and is decorated with world famous frescoes that depict the consequences of good and bad government.

  • The Piazza del Campo – recognized as one of Europe’s most significant public squares is also the setting for the annual Palio horse race which takes place in July and August.

  • The Torre del Mangia – a 330 foot tower offering spectacular views of the city and surrounding countryside.

If you’re planning a trip to Italy, you don’t want to miss the laid-back feel of Tuscany.  It's a definite contrast to the busy pace of Rome and the tourist overload in Venice, and a side trip you’ll be happy you took!
