One of the joys of river cruising is the ability to explore small, historical towns that are rich in culture and legends. On my Avalon River Cruise, one such stop that captured my heart was the quaint town of Dürnstein in Austria, nestled along the stunning Danube River. It was it a beautiful town to explore, and a fascinating piece of history.

The Legend of King Richard the Lionheart
Dürnstein is famous for its castle, where the legendary English king, Richard the Lionheart, was imprisoned during the late 12th century. While on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, King Richard was captured and held in this very castle by Duke Leopold V of Austria. The town’s most iconic landmark, the Dürnstein Castle, stands tall above the town, offering panoramic views of the Danube Valley. It’s hard not to be in awe of the history surrounding this place.

A Hike to the Castle
On the river cruise, we had the opportunity to hike to the top of the hill to visit the castle. The climb was challenging but incredibly rewarding, as we walked through scenic pathways shaded by lush greenery. The medieval architecture of the castle became more imposing as we got closer. The sense of history was palpable as we stood in the same spot where King Richard was once held captive. I couldn’t help but think of the irony—my husband, Richard King (or “King Richard” as I like to call him), standing there with me.

A Truly Memorable Experience
Our visit to Dürnstein was a highlight of our Avalon River Cruise, not only because of the magnificent views and rich history but because of the humor it brought to our adventure. Exploring Europe on a river cruise allows you to step back in time and experience history in a very real way. Whether it's visiting medieval castles, sampling local wines, or hiking through stunning landscapes, each port of call brings its own sense of discovery.

If you’re considering a river cruise, I highly recommend a stop in Dürnstein. The history, the hike, and the beauty of the region are unforgettable.
