Freight's Bay - Barbados, Caribbean

To Access These Islands, You’ll Either Have to Change Planes or Catch a Less Frequent Direct Flight

If you're up for a little extra travel time, these stunning islands are absolutely worth it. Each one offers something special—whether it’s romantic boutique hotels, laid-back vibes, or epic snorkeling. Here’s a quick look at some gems that may not be on everyone’s radar—but should be!

Antigua

Antigua is often considered one of the most romantic islands in the Caribbean, known for its intimate boutique hotels. Whether you’re looking for a luxurious getaway, a family stay, or a dreamy escape for two, there’s a perfect spot here. And with 365 powdery white-sand beaches, you could hit a new one every day of the year.

Visiting in early August? Don’t miss the Antigua Carnival—a vibrant 13-day celebration filled with music, dancing, and local culture. Seafood lovers will be in heaven. For a taste of real island life, I highly recommend a visit to St. John’s, the island’s largest town. I’ve been—and I loved it!

Anguilla

Looking for a more off-the-beaten-path, non-touristy island? Anguilla might be your perfect match. The beaches are pristine, the locals are kind, and the food is fantastic. You'll find everything from laid-back beach bars to fine dining, with accommodations ranging from affordable to ultra-luxurious.

Heads-up: If you have mobility concerns, this may not be the best island for you, as many properties aren’t accessibility-friendly.

Barbados

If nightlife is your thing, Barbados brings the energy. Head to “The Gap” for vibrant clubs, and don’t miss the famous Friday nights at Oistins—an open-air fish fry with music, dancing, and seriously good food.

There’s more than just party vibes here. Think body surfing, hiking, golfing, and historical sights like The Garrison—a must for history buffs. The capital, Bridgetown, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and with a mix of 4+ star accommodations, there’s something for everyone.

Bermuda

Okay, so Bermuda isn’t technically in the Caribbean, but it’s too beautiful to leave off this list. Picture pink-sand beaches, pastel-colored buildings, and some of the best island golf courses out there.

Travel Tip: May through October is prime beach season. Visiting in March or April? You’ll find better pricing—but it might be a bit cool for swimming.

Bonaire

Nature lovers, this one’s for you. Bonaire has some rocky beaches, but also beautiful stretches of sand, amazing wildlife (hello donkeys, flamingos, and iguanas!), and a peaceful, undeveloped vibe.

Check out mangrove kayaking at Lac Bay, or visit Washington Slagbaai National Park, the island’s first nature sanctuary. It’s also a haven for diving, windsurfing, and kite surfing. Bonus: the food trucks here are legit.

British Virgin Islands

They call it “Nature’s Little Secrets” for a reason. The British Virgin Islands are an untouched paradise made up of gems like Jost Van Dyke, Tortola, and Virgin Gorda.

Whether you’re into low-key beach bars or surfing at Apple Bay, there’s a spot for you. It’s not a budget destination, which usually means fewer crowds—something many travelers appreciate.

Curaçao

Rugged north coast. Calm, crystal-clear south coast. Curaçao gives you the best of both worlds—with epic snorkeling on one side and dramatic natural beauty on the other.

The island’s cultural blend shows up in the food, architecture, and music. With year-round sun (averaging 85°F!), it’s always a good time to visit. And yes, this is where that famous blue liqueur comes from—sip a colorful cocktail and soak in the vibes.

Dominica

If big crowds aren’t your thing, Dominica is your island. Known as the “Nature Island,” this lush, jungle-covered escape is ideal for travelers who want more than just beaches.

Stay in boutique spots tucked in the forest or perched on cliffs. Go horseback riding, birdwatching, hiking, or snorkel at Champagne Reef, named for its bubbling volcanic vents. A total hidden gem.

Grenada

Grenada’s beaches are stunning—Grand Anse Beach often tops “best beaches” lists. But this island is more than just a pretty face. If you’re into hiking, waterfalls, rainforests, or diving, it’s a dream.

Check out the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park for snorkeling or shallow dives. Advanced diver? Don’t miss the Bianca C—a deep wreck known as the “Titanic of the Caribbean.” And don’t forget to grab some local nutmeg and rum before heading home!
