Mexico: The Caribbean Side

Mexico’s called your name! Now, the question is: which side of the country is right for you? Are you drawn to the Caribbean side?

Each coast offers stunning views, resorts, and activities, but the Pacific and Caribbean sides are very different. The Pacific coast has dramatic cliffs, hazel-colored sands, and a more laid-back feel. On the Caribbean side, you’ll find the white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a range of vibes—from spring break energy to romantic getaways.

Riviera Maya

Let’s start with my personal favorite: the Riviera Maya! My toes have touched the white sands here about 14 times over the last 20 years, and it never gets old. The beauty of this area is its versatility—you can be as active or as relaxed as you want. The resorts are generally no more than 4 stories, so they blend seamlessly with the lush, tropical landscape. You’ll get that true Caribbean feel while soaking in all the Mexican charm. Plus, with Playa del Carmen nearby, you have access to plenty of fun nightclubs, bars, and shopping.

The beaches here vary, so if they’re important to you, just let me know, and we’ll find the best resort for you. Some of the popular spots in the Riviera Maya include Tulum, Akumal, Playacar, Puerto Morelos, Puerto Aventuras, Maroma Beach, and Playa del Carmen.

Popular Riviera Maya Tours/Attractions:

  • Mayan Ruins: Chichen Itza, Tulum, or Coba

  • Snorkeling the Cenotes (natural sinkholes created millions of years ago)

  • Xcaret Park

  • Xplor Park

  • Xel-Há Park

Cozumel

If you’re into snorkeling or scuba diving, Cozumel is the place to be. This island offers direct access to the world’s second-longest coral reef. History buffs will love the San Gervasio Mayan Archaeological Site. While it’s smaller than other Mayan sites, it’s still worth checking out if ancient architecture fascinates you. This island has a calm, tranquil vibe that could be perfect for your next getaway.

Popular Cozumel Tours:

  • Submarine Tours

  • Chankanaab National Park

  • Cozumel Reefs National Park

  • Snorkel Columbia Reef

  • Cave & Cenote Tour

  • Fishing

Cancun

Cancun is the ultimate destination for a beach resort getaway. The pristine beaches stretch for miles, with a variety of resorts offering everything from luxury to laid-back comfort. Known for its lively atmosphere, Cancun offers a mix of exciting nightlife, shopping (from high-end boutiques to local markets), and incredible resorts that make for an unforgettable vacation. Whether you’re into exploring vibrant clubs or relaxing by the beach, Cancun has something for everyone. Plus, with plenty of tours and activities nearby, it’s perfect for those looking to combine relaxation with adventure.

Popular Cancun Tours:

  • Shark Diving

  • Water Skiing & Jet Skiing

  • Surfing, Windsurfing & Kite Surfing

  • Swim with Dolphins

  • Parasailing

Isla Mujeres

If you’re looking for a more laid-back vibe, Isla Mujeres might be just the place. This small island offers some incredibly remote beaches, plus stunning sunrises and sunsets. For sunrise, head to the southern part of the island, and for sunsets, the best spot is the west side of Playa Norte. Don’t miss Punta Sur, the easternmost point of Mexico. It might seem simple at first, but once you start hiking down the cliffs, you’ll be amazed by the beauty.

Keep in mind, many restaurants are open-air, so it can get a little warmer, and there aren’t as many all-inclusive resorts here. But if you’re after a more authentic, relaxed experience, this is definitely a place to consider.

Popular Isla Mujeres Tours/Attractions:

  • Swimming with Whale Sharks

  • Underwater Museum Snorkel Tour (over 500 life-sized sculptures)

  • Catamaran/Sailing Tours

  • Garrafón Reef Park

Playa Mujeres / Costa Mujeres

Playa Mujeres is a relatively new area being developed, and it has a more secluded feel to it. You’ll enter through a gated checkpoint, ensuring a sense of exclusivity. Depending on the resort, you can enjoy a quiet, private vibe with easy access to the ferry to Isla Mujeres. This is a great area for those looking for peace and quiet but still want access to tours and activities.

Isla Holbox (Holbox Island)

Already checked out Cancun, Riviera Maya, and Tulum? Isla Holbox is an un-crowded gem. While it’s still considered “touristy,” it’s not nearly as packed as the other popular spots. Just a two-hour drive from Cancun, then a short flight or ferry ride, this island offers a laid-back, quiet charm that makes it an ideal choice if you want to get off the beaten path.

Merida

For a historical, colonial experience, Merida is a great option. While not on the Caribbean side, you’ll fly into the coast and travel about 4 hours west to this charming city. With a vibrant bar, food, and museum scene, it’s perfect for culture and history lovers.
