The Canadian Rockies: A True Bucket List Experience

The Canadian Rockies are a bucket list must for so many travelers. Canada’s breathtaking scenery is something you simply have to see with your own eyes at least once in your lifetime. And Rocky Mountaineer offers some incredible rail journeys that let you do just that!

Here are some key things to help you decide if this experience is right for you:

Level of Service

Both SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf offer wonderful experiences, but there are some differences to know.

SilverLeaf – This service features beautiful panoramic views and delicious meals and drinks delivered right to your seat. You’ll have two entrée choices for breakfast and lunch. Dinner is on your own, but can be added to your package if you’d like.

GoldLeaf – GoldLeaf offers a custom-designed, bi-level glass-domed coach with restaurant-style dining. You’ll get 5 to 6 entrée choices for breakfast and lunch, plus access to an exclusive outdoor viewing platform.Regardless of which you choose, all travel is during daylight hours so you can soak in the stunning views. Meals, snacks, and beverages—including local wines from British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley—are all included onboard. Overnight dinners are on your own unless you choose to add them to your package.

Rail Routes

Rocky Mountaineer offers three routes: two to Jasper and one to Banff.

A unique benefit is that some routes access areas not reachable by car—like the breathtaking Pyramid Falls, which you can only truly appreciate from the train.

No matter which route you pick, plan on spending at least one night in Vancouver, if not two or three. Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and if you want to visit Victoria, you’ll need two nights there since it’s an all-day trip. Don’t miss having lunch on Granville Island—such a cool experience!

Package Options

You can choose motor-coach excursions or explore on your own with self-drive. Don’t worry—there’s only one road in the Rockies, so getting lost is nearly impossible! Plus, the drive is scenic and easy.

When to Go

Rocky Mountaineer runs mid-April through mid-October, and the season you choose makes a difference:

  • Spring: Snow-capped peaks and plenty of wildlife coming out of hibernation. Keep in mind Lake Louise stays frozen until about June 1st.

  • Summer: Gorgeous weather, everything in full bloom, but expect bigger crowds.

  • Autumn: Vibrant fall colors in Vancouver and stunning contrasts in the Rockies between golden aspen leaves and evergreens. Wildlife is active, preparing for winter.
