In all my years as a Travel Professional, I’ve asked countless people, “What’s on your must-see list?” And without fail, New Zealand is always at the top! Honestly, who wouldn’t want to experience this majestic ...

Cliffs of Moher

I’m guessing you’ve heard of the Cliffs of Moher—but what about Slieve League?

Yes, the Cliffs of Moher are iconic and absolutely a must-see, but believe me when I say: Slieve League is even more majestic and breathtaking.

Let’s start with the ever-famous Cliffs of Moher.

Because of their worldwide reputation, this spot draws a lot of visitors. But don’t let the crowds deter you—it’s still worth the visit. The views are nothing short of stunning. When you first arrive, you’ll probably find yourself thinking, “Wow, I’m actually seeing this in person!” That moment alone is worth it.

You'll notice most people gather around O’Brien’s Tower, which offers a fantastic vantage point for those sweeping, postcard-worthy photos.

Just beyond the tower, there’s a sign that reads “Caution beyond this point.” If you're physically able, I highly recommend continuing past it. The further you go, the quieter it gets, and the more unique the views become. Of course, proceed carefully—some sections are close to the cliff's edge, so stay aware of your surroundings. We absolutely loved exploring this less-traveled stretch of the cliffs. It’s where you’ll find some of the most incredible and one-of-a-kind photo opportunities.

Now, onto my personal favorite: Slieve League.

Located about an hour west of Donegal, getting there is a scenic experience in itself. You’ll cruise along the coastline, winding through charming little towns. When you arrive, you’ll spot a small parking area—but don’t stop there just yet. Instead, look for a gate nearby. Hop out, open it (make sure to close it behind you—there are sheep inside!), and drive on through.

You’ll follow a narrow, winding road up the mountain until you reach another small lot—this is your starting point for the hike. And let me tell you: the views from here are next level.

During our walk along Slieve League, we encountered maybe a dozen people total. Unlike the Cliffs of Moher, Slieve League remains relatively under the radar, which makes the experience even more special. You’re surrounded by sheer cliff drops, peaceful silence, and yes—plenty of friendly sheep wandering the hillsides and often walking right beside you. It adds such a charming and unexpected touch to the adventure.

On our way back to Donegal, we stopped at Mary Murrin’s Bar/Pub—a family-owned, traditional spot in Bruckless. The vibe was warm and authentic, and the seafood? Delicious. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.

So, which cliffside wonder should you choose?

Honestly, both are stunning and worthy in their own right. If you have the time, I recommend seeing both—they each offer something truly unique. But if I had to pick just one? My vote goes to Slieve League. It’s a place that left a lasting impression, and one I’ll never forget.
