It's not ju...

Over the course of 10 days, my son Drew and I explored the wonders of ancient Greece, the breathtaking coastline of Montenegro, the magic of Croatia, and the timeless beauty of Venice.

As a travel advisor and a mom, this voyage was extra special. It was our “one last hurrah” before Drew began his next chapter, starting his BMET (biomedical equipment technician) program. And what better way to celebrate new beginnings than dancing under the stars on New Year’s Eve somewhere between Athens and Santorini?

Here’s a look at our unforgettable adventure—from ruins to waterfalls, myths to monasteries.

Athens, Greece: The Cradle of Civilization

Our journey began in Athens, a city full of history. Standing before the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site over 2,450 years old,  we wandered the Plaka District, Athens’ oldest neighborhood, this was one of my personal highlights. Its cobblestone streets, colorful doors, and lively café scene was a dream. I could spend hours photographing places like this!

Katakolon & Olympia: In the Footsteps of Champions

From the port of Katakolon, we traveled inland to Olympia, the ancient site of the Olympic Games which were held in honor of Zeus. Walking among the ruins, it was fun to imagine athletes competing in the original stadium. We capped off our visit with a stop at Magna Grecia, a family-owned estate nestled in the Peloponnese, where we sampled local olives, wine, and Greek hospitality.

Corfu, Greece: My Favorite Island Stop

Corfu stole my heart. Our morning started at the 13th-century Paleokastritsa Monastery, with its panoramic views of the Ionian Sea. Afterward we wandered Corfu’s charming streets filled with breathtaking architecture, boutique shops, cozy cafés, and warm smiles. It was a perfect day in every way—and easily my favorite Greek island stop of the trip.

Kotor, Montenegro: A Hidden Gem in the Mountains

Montenegro was a jaw-dropper. The port city of Kotor, surrounded by misty mountains and deep blue waters felt like stepping into a painting. We were treated to a private concert at an 18th-century monastery. This was one of those moments that stays with you long after the trip ends.

Dubrovnik, Croatia: King’s Landing Come to Life

As a Game of Thrones fan, walking through Dubrovnik’s Old Town was surreal. Many buildings here were used as filming locations for King’s Landing. Even without the cinematic connections Dubrovnik is a marvel—its medieval walls still encircle a city where people live, shop, and gather just as they did centuries ago. I didn’t get a chance to ferry to Lokrum Island (where the original Iron Throne sits), but there's always next time!

Zadar, Croatia: Waterfalls & Wooden Trails

One of my biggest travel dreams came true in Zadar—a visit to Krka National Park. With 17 waterfalls, 27,000 acres, and boardwalks suspended over crystal-clear water, it was everything I imagined and more. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the kind of place that leaves you awestruck by your surroundings.

Koper, Slovenia: Straight from a Storybook

Koper was like walking into a fairytale. From its hilltop castle to the chapel on a tiny island (reachable only by a sweeping staircase), it was utterly enchanting. Slovenia was a wonderful surprise—a perfect blend of romance, history, and natural beauty.

Venice, Italy: La Serenissima

And then, we arrived in Venice—a city like no other. Drifting past its domes and bell towers as the sun dipped low was the perfect grand finale. We wandered the winding alleyways, admired the architecture from a traditional gondola, and ended our journey with gratitude for our time spent together making memories.

Ringing in 2025 in Style

Viking really knows how to throw a party!  We welcomed the new year on deck, dancing under the stars and sipping champagne as fireworks sparkled in the distance. The next morning, we indulged in a New Year’s Day brunch fit for royalty. It was festive, elegant, and unforgettable.
