Afternoon Tea on the Queen Mary 2

If you’ve spent some time investigating cruises, you’ll quickly discover that the word “luxury” is perhaps the most overused word in the travel industry.  I’ve yet to find a somewhat upscale cruise line that doesn’t define itself as a luxury brand, yet, luxury is such a subjective term that it’s almost impossible to translate into a meaningful insight into what you’re actually purchasing.  After all, one person’s indulgence may be another person’s ordinary.

In my travels, I’ve come to define luxury as the sense of well-being I enjoy when I’m well taken care of, without the pressure of time and daily routine, so that I can truly appreciate my surroundings and enjoy enriching experiences.  It’s a sense of feeling special, feeling free, and feeling open to the inspiration around me.

I’ve found luxury in places I’ve expected, and some that I didn’t – sometimes in long-anticipated experiences, other times in the smallest of details.  I recently enjoyed that special feeling on a cruise on Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2.

Let’s cover one base right away – the hardware.  Queen Mary 2 is a large ship with some of the grandest and most elegant public spaces afloat.  Unique on the high seas, she is a true ocean liner, a contemporary vessel that pays homage to the ocean liners of the past.  In the words of the Times of London, “she is the heir to all that has gone before, and carries the grace and elegance of a bygone era into the future.”  Photos don’t do justice to the beauty and majesty of the ship.

But, beautiful surroundings alone don’t make for a luxury cruise.  It takes more to create that special feeling, and I’m happy to report that Queen Mary 2 delivers.

One place where I experienced the sense of feeling special was during afternoon tea, served daily in the elegant Queen’s Room.  From the moment we were greeted at the door, to the warmth and polish of the white gloved servers as they delivered delicious bite after delicious bite to the table, to the soothing sounds of the string quartet, it was a delightful experience.

Days at sea blended with days ashore, but that special feeling continued, as I enjoyed brisk strolls on the spacious open decks, quiet time in the 8,000 volume library selecting a book to enjoy, or just watching the excellent after dinner shows each night – punctuated with excellent meals in the dining room, specialty restaurants, and even the traditional British Pub Lunch served in the Golden Lion Pub.

Best of all – the special feeling stayed with me long after I returned home!
