Cunard's Magical Queen Mary 2

In 1840, the first Cunard liner – Britannia – crossed the Atlantic Ocean from England to the United States.  Since then, millions have crossed the ocean by ship.  With the dawn of the jet age in the 1950’s, crossing by ship was no longer the only way to cross, and the Golden Age of the transatlantic liner came to end.

Well, almost.

Launched in 2004, Cunard’s majestic Queen Mary 2 continues the tradition of crossing the Atlantic in grand style, offering an iconic bucket list experience and a unique way to start or end a European vacation.  Sailing between New York and Southampton (about 2 hours from London), Queen Mary 2 crosses the Atlantic in seven days, allowing plenty of time to savor the tremendous range of activities available onboard…or, simply, to disconnect and relax.

It is, frankly, impossible to be bored while onboard this authentic liner.  You’ll enjoy fine dining, perhaps starting with a full English breakfast delivered to your room.  Order one of your favorite British pub lunches, such as Fish n’ Chips or Bangers and Mash, in the authentic ambiance of the Golden Lion Pub, accompanied by a draught British beer.  Delight in a gourmet meal in the elegant surroundings of the Britannia Restaurant, or enjoy the finest in food and service in the Queens or Princess Grill.  Cap off the evening with a glass of vintage port, accompanied by a fine Stilton, Brie, or Double Gloucester cheese.

Stimulate your mind by enjoying an interesting lecture through the Cunard Insights program, which brings world-renowned experts and celebrity speakers onboard to share and entertain guests.  Or, how about stargazing in the world’s only planetarium at sea?  The intellectually curious will also treasure the opportunity to browse the 8,000 volume onboard library.

Relax and indulge in one of the world’s finest spas at sea, the Canyon Ranch SpaClub.  Or, try your hand at the world’s most challenging golf courses in the golf simulator.  For the more active, three laps around the ship’s outdoor promenade deck make a mile!

In the evening, the ship’s multiple entertainment venues come alive with the best in live musical performances.  Enjoy a classical string quartet, dance the night away to a full big band orchestra in the beautiful surroundings of the Queen’s Room, or watch a top quality production show.

That’s only a taste of what’s in store on a transatlantic crossing on Queen Mary 2.

For me, the prospect of seven days at sea offers a unique chance to leave the daily hustle and bustle behind, and be transported into another world, a world where luxury, heritage, and endless options lead to a sense of indulgence and serenity found nowhere else on earth.

A transatlantic crossing on Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2 can be its own vacation, or for those with the time, it’s an excellent bookmark before or after a European vacation.  From Southampton, it’s easy to access London and the rest of Britain, or a short hop to Paris and the delights of continental Europe.  Or, take advantage of one of Queen Mary 2’s period cruises to extend your stay onboard and visit the Norwegian coast or Baltic Sea.  Once a year, there’s even an opportunity to travel on all three Cunard Queens in one extended vacation – the ultimate European holiday!

As a veteran of over twenty ocean and river cruises worldwide, including several on Cunard Line, I can help you sift through the clutter and choose the right cruise for you, while helping you navigate the bewildering array of promotions available.  I can also plan a European vacation before or after your transatlantic crossing, ensuring that you’ll enjoy the same high level of service and luxury while onshore.
