Alaska's Impressive Hubbard Glacier

A cruise to Alaska is a perfect way to bring your family together for a multigenerational vacation while checking off a bucket list destination at the same time.

The cruise season lasts from May to September, but if you have kids who are still in school, June, July and August are great months to travel to Alaska, and you’ll find lots of options. Regent Seven Seas, Princess and Cunard offer cruises from Vancouver, Seattle or San Francisco in the summer, lasting anywhere from 7 to 14 days.

Alaska’s breathtaking natural beauty is unlike anything you’ll see in the Lower 48. It’s an experience that will amaze and enchant travelers of all ages. The deck of a cruise ship offers an unbeatable vantage point for taking in landmarks like Hubbard Glacier, 76 miles long and 7 miles wide. Only by cruising alongside can you truly appreciate its colossal scale. You’ll also have a chance to spot wildlife on land and sea, from bears and moose to whales.

Cruises offer lots of advantages for families, too, especially if your group includes parents, children and grandparents. You only unpack once and never have to worry about finding things to do or figuring out how you’ll get to your next stop. Some ships even have family suites with two interconnecting staterooms, so everyone can stay together.

Cruises are all about choices, from dining options to onboard activities to shore excursions. That makes them ideal for groups with a variety of ages and interests.

For example, mom and dad can take a cooking class while the grandparents enjoy afternoon tea. The grandchildren can splash in the pool or head to activity areas for young passengers that are offered by all three cruise lines, with everything from arts and crafts to computer games, sports and science projects. At dinner, everyone can get together to talk about their day and enjoy some quality family time.

Alaska’s shore excursions are also fun for the whole family. You’ll get a great taste for the state’s rich history and culture that kids and adults alike will appreciate. Like onboard activities, there are always choices, so everyone in the family doesn’t have to do the same thing.

In ports like the thriving fishing town of Ketchikan, your family can learn about the culture of Native Alaskans. The kids will be awed by Ketchikan’s large display of totem poles, while adults will find lots of places to shop for locally made crafts and jewelry. More adventurous family members can go kayaking or fishing. Naturally, you’ll find restaurants serving some of Alaska’s freshest seafood, like crabs and salmon.

Skagway, another popular stop, is a well-preserved, historic town that served as the gateway to the 19th-century gold rush. And there are several ways to explore the town. You can ride high into the mountains on the White Pass Scenic Railway, take a bicycle trip through the rainforest or enjoy Skagway’s landmarks from the comfort of a streetcar tour.

No matter which cruise you pick, you’ll create memories to cherish for a lifetime. As a veteran Alaska traveler and certified destination consultant, I can help you choose the right option for your family.
