I’ve been looking forward exploring Iceland and this summer I was able to with National Geographic Lindblad Wild Iceland Expedition Cruise. It was amazing roaming the vibrant streets of Reykjavik to the rugged beauty of remote islands, this trip was everything I imagined and more. Here’s a glimpse into my adventure.

Arrival in Reykjavik
We kicked off our trip with a night in Reykjavik. After a delicious dinner at the Hard Rock Café, we strolled through the charming town under a beautiful sunset. The weather was perfect for exploring, but we decided to rest up for the expedition ahead.

The Cruise Begins
The National Geographic Explorer is a smaller expedition ship with cozy staterooms and inviting public spaces. Lindblad treated us to a guided city tour, a visit to the local history museum, and a fantastic lunch. We spent the evening watching whales right from our stateroom window—a magical start to our cruise.

Adventure Day 1: Whales and Hikes
Our first day of adventure included a thrilling zodiac ride to shore for a moderate hike. While it ended up being over three miles (more than I anticipated), the stunning landscapes made every step worth it. We toured an old herring factory—a fascinating glimpse into Iceland’s history. Dinner onboard was a highlight and dessert was the perfect ending to a long but fulfilling day.

Adventure Day 2: Islands and Wildlife
We explored two incredible ports. We visited Drangey, a small island known for its stunning wildlife. A zodiac water landing led us to a serene cruise where we spotted whales, seals, and puffins. My husband  and I split up in the afternoon—I went on an Iceland history tour, learning about turf houses and visiting a horse farm to meet Iceland’s unique, sturdy horses. Ray pushed his limits with an exhilarating white-water rafting excursion and it was a highlight for him!

Adventure Day 3: Fjords and Flowers
Today was a bit more relaxed. We enjoyed a scenic motorcoach ride through breathtaking fjords and visited a charming garden showcasing native Icelandic plants. The day ended with another incredible whale sighting—a pod of humpback whales playing just 100 yards from our ship. These types of things are what makes expedition cruising, specifically Lindblad, so special.

Adventure Day 4: Puffins and Photography
The morning was spent cruising as we attended a photography workshop led by a National Geographic photojournalist.  We explored Vigir Island which is a nesting ground for puffins and ducks. The puffins had already migrated for the season but learning about the island’s ecosystem was fascinating.

Final Days at Sea and the Golden Circle
Our last sailing day included insightful presentations on Icelandic folklore and history, followed by a bumpy but fun zodiac ride to a stunning waterfall. We extended our adventure with a Golden Circle tour. Highlights included Iceland’s largest lake, an erupting geyser, the breathtaking Gullfoss waterfall, and a relaxing soak in the Secret Lagoon—a perfect end to an unforgettable journey.

Why Expedition Cruising? And Iceland.
This expedition cruise was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. From spotting whales and exploring remote islands to immersing ourselves in Iceland’s culture and history, every moment was extraordinary. If you’re looking for an adventure that combines natural beauty, wildlife encounters, and cultural immersion, an expedition cruise to Iceland should be at the top of your list!
